HISTORY:

The Dana Art Gallery was established in 1975 by Head of Art Department and instructor, G. A. Scattergood, made possible with a gift from the 25th reunion class of 1949. This gift provided for a security gate which allowed the Gallery to evolve from a room used exclusively for displaying students artwork into an attractive and secure exhibition space with carpeted floors, large white display panels and track lighting that would attract professional artists.

Originally, the goal of the Gallery program was to give the visual arts, emphaising the creative production of women, a prominent and interactive role within the school, while creating ties with the greater community beyond the school. Today the Gallery program continues to provide:

  • an educational resource for the Dana Hall community by introducing a variety of visual means of expression and communication.
  • an opportunity for the work of our students, faculty, parent, grandparents and alumnae to be shared with the Dana community and the community outside of the school.
  • role models for our students with special emphasis on exhibiting the art of women artists and providing exhibitions with feminist/social themes.
  • encouragement to and exhibition space for professional and novice local artists.

The Gallery was described in an article for The Boston Sunday Globe (April 6, 1995) as being "one of the hidden treasures of the western suburbs... a launching platform for several artists who have built widespread reputations." Exhibitions and aritst receptions, which are publicized in the Boston and local news media, are well attended by the general public.

Some exhibits have emphasized career opportunities in the fields of photojournalism, scientific illustration, graphic design, architectural rendering, crafts and fine arts.

Among the more popular exhibits have been those featuring fine art quilts and fiber arts by such distinguished artists as Linda Behar, Nancy Crasco, Radka Donnell, Sylvia Einstein, Sarah Gindel, Carol Anne Grotrian, Nancy Halpern, and Molly Upton '71 (whose quilted tapestry, "Torrid Dwelling," was named among the 20th Century's Best American Quilts).

Past shows of note have included scientific illustrations by Turid Holldobler, and Sue Simon; photographs by Tia Giovan '78, Janice Levy '74, Mark Morelli, Susan Lirakis Nicolay '70, Jim Stone, and photographs for "The Human Form in Motion," by Eadweard Muybridge; sculpture and drawings by Lloyd Lillie; root sculptures by James Rodrigues P'00; labyrinths and sacred sites by Marty Cain; computer graphic art by Dorothy Simpson Krause; books and collaborations by Holly Ewald '72; silkscreen prints for "Endangered Species," by The Graphic Workshop; prints and drawings by Sigmund Abeles; paintings by Lee Garrison '45, Anne Leone '77, Meg Brown Payson '72; Islamic calligraphy & tiles by Zuhal Karamanli; African tribal art from Tim Hamill Gallery.

An exhibitition of Helen West Heller woodcuts was held in the Dana Art Gallery from January 13 to February 7, 2003. This was the most significant exhibition of Miss Heller's art work since her death in 1955. Over fifty woodcuts (executed from 1924 to 1953) plus illustrated books, a painting and copper relief were on display.

Exhibitions of the artwork by distinguished Dana Hall alumnae, parents, grandparents, faculty and staff are included in the gallery schedule on an annual basis. The final gallery exhibition of the academic year showcases the work of Dana Hall students in the senior class.
